Cubs finish strong homestand but miss chance to sweep Padres

The Cubs couldn’t quite finish the sweep. And now they have to go on the road, where they’ve struggled all year.

Kyle Hendricks threw seven strong innings, but the Padres beat the Cubs 5-1 on Sunday. Looking for his first win since June 9, Hendricks allowed two runs and four hits. Tied 1-1 in the seventh, he gave up Francisco Mejia’s go-ahead home run into the right-field basket.

With two outs and two on, Carl Edwards Jr. came on for his first appearance since June 9 and walked Luis Urias to load the bases. He then hit Greg Garcia for one run, then gave up a two-run Fernando Tatis Jr.
