NEW YORK – Cubs rookie Cade Horton knew exactly what he wanted to throw to put away Mets superstar Juan Soto.
In a game the Cubs would go on to win 6-5, Horton was 3 u2154 innings into his major-league debut, and he hadn’t yet thrown a changeup.
“That pitch is overlooked,” Horton said after the game. “I throw it so little on the scouting report, and he’d already seen a lot of breaking stuff. And so I just wanted to mix something in.”
In a 2-2 count, Horton shook to a fastball up. Then he threw an 86 mph changeup off the plate, and Soto whiffed.
