Beloved ex-Cubs prospect given new lease on career in NL West

Nearly a week after he was released by the Miami Marlins, former Chicago Cubs first base prospect Matt Mervis has found a new home in the National League West. Mervis has signed a minor-league deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks, and the beloved former Cubs' prospect will report to Triple-A Reno.

Signing with the Diamondbacks was a smart play for Mervis. Among the moves that the Diamondbacks made at the deadline was moving first baseman Josh Naylor and third baseman Eugenio Suarez to the Seattle Mariners.

Tyler Locklear was among the prospects the Diamondbacks received from the Mariners, and he has had a slow start to his career in Arizona.
