Today in baseball history:

  • 1919 - William Veeck Sr, former sportswriter, replaces Fred Mitchell as Cubs president, but Mitchell remains field manager for Chicago. (2)

President at that time was similar to the General Manager position today. Bill Sr, father of the more infamous Jr, “brought home two National League pennants (1929 and 1932) and helped build the foundations for two others (1935 and 1938).
