Amid skid, Cubs buoyed by 'solace' of staying within striking distance

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs dropped to six games under .500 (20-26) after completing a recent 2-7 road trip but their manager is staying positive about their playoff hopes thanks to a weak NL Central.

"Thank goodness for the s---ty play of everybody in the division," David Ross said with a smile on Tuesday afternoon.

Going into play on Tuesday, five games separated the five teams in the division as Milwaukee and Pittsburgh sit atop it but with only a .532 winning percentage. The Cubs are 4.5 games behind those teams. They begin a nine game home stand this week, attempting to make up some ground.
