David Rundblad is headed back overseas.
After being loaned to the ZSC Lions of the National League A — commonly known as the Swiss league — by the Blackhawks last January, the 25-year-old defenseman inked a one-year contract to return to Switzerland, the team announced Friday.
Rundblad and the Blackhawks mutually agreed to terminate his contract in July. The move gave Rundblad, who signed a two-year extension with the Blackhawks in June 2015 and was set to make $1.1 million in 2016-17, a chance to start fresh elsewhere and it also opened up cap space for the Blackhawks, who faced no penalty.
