The Chicago Blackhawks will have a salary cap overage of $3.07 million on the books for the 2016-17 season, assistant GM Norm Maciver revealed to The Athletic's Scott Powers on Thursday.
A salary cap overage occurs when a team's year-end bonuses put them above the upper limit of the cap. In the case of the Blackhawks, who were right up against the salary cap at the end of last season, that meant pretty much every bonus dollar paid out would have to carry over to their books for the 2016-17 season as a cap overage.
