Versatile Patterson a wild card in Nagy’s hand

Asked about Cordarrelle Patterson’s potential as a wild-card in the Bears’ offense, coach Matt Nagy couldn’t help himself from a little sardonic humor befitting an offense that has underachieved in the first two games of the season.

“It’s a benefit — unless it’s third-and-1 and you’re trying to get a first down with him back there,” Nagy said to laugher at the Halas Hall media room — referring to an ill-fated play against the Packers that lost two yards.

But even the Bears’ struggling offense can’t hide Patterson’s potential as a playmaker. Lining up as the lone back behind Trubisky on a first-and-10 play from the Bears’ 32-yard line in the third quarter against the Broncos last week, Patterson took a pitch from Trubisky, went left and turned it upfield for a 46-yard gain.
