Chicago Bears OT Teven Jenkins to have back surgery, team hopes he can return this season

Chicago Bears rookie offensive tackle Teven Jenkins will undergo back surgery on Wednesday, coach Matt Nagy said.

Nagy said he hopes Jenkins, whom the Bears traded up to draft 39th overall in the second round, will be able to return this season.

Jenkins has not practiced during training camp with what Nagy had called "back tightness."

The Bears released longtime starting left tackle Charles Leno Jr. in May, seemingly paving a way for Jenkins to take over the position. Jenkins played both left and right tackle at Oklahoma State. Perhaps signaling the severity of Jenkins' injury, the Bears signed veteran left tackle Jason Peters on Saturday.
