At the end of the first half in Monday night’s game, the San Diego Chargers were on the Chicago Bears 23-yard line with 11 seconds remaining and no timeouts. This usually means the offense can take a single vertical shot to the end zone and then try a long field goal, or try to shorten the kick with a pass on an out pattern that would stop the clock.
The Bears made the decision easy for the Chargers by playing an extreme form of prevent defense -- a call usually reserved for end-of-game scenarios where only a touchdown could possibly affect the game.
