For the 12th time in the last 14 drafts, the Bears used a draft choice on a safety (and that doesn’t include free-agency signings). It’s a pattern that has to end sometime.
In the meantime, the Bears used their fifth-round pick on Penn State safety Adrian Amos, who started 38 straight games for the Nittany Lions. He’ll immediately compete with Brock Vereen, last year’s fourth-round pick, for playing time. Like Vereen, who played extensively at cornerback through his career, Amos worked at cornerback early and switched.
“I played corner most of my career then moved over to safety and I’ve been getting better and better at safety, especially over the past year playing safety,” said Amos, who becomes one of the Bears’ bigger safeties at 6-foot-0, 214 pounds.
