Jamie Gittens sped away from Borussia Dortmund's Hohenbuschei training ground on Tuesday night disappointed after being denied a move to Chelsea in time for the Club World Cup.
Chelsea left it late to raise their offer for the England U21 international winger and ultimately, with the clock ticking, chose not to go beyond a bid of £42million.
They had previously put in a £29.5m bid that was also knocked back by the Bundesliga outfit.
The 20-year-old hopes they rekindle talks once the summer window re-opens and that Dortmund moderate their demands for £55m.
