The 49ers (6-8) lost their series-opener against the Fairfield Stags (4-5) Friday afternoon, 3-2. The only explanation for the outcome was that Fairfield wanted the win.

“Fairfield played better than we did. They pitched better, they played better defense, they put better swings on. You have to give them credit,” head coach Loren Hibbs said.

Starting on the mound for Charlotte was lefty Sean Geoghegan. Geoghegan had started three games earlier in the season and recorded seven runs on 16 hits, six strikeouts, 2 hit-by-pitch’s and a 2.79 ERA. During the six innings pitched Friday, he allowed three runs on four hits two walks and three HBP.
