Niners Split Saturday, Pick Up 5th Shutout of Season

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Charlotte softball team split its two games Saturday, suffering its first loss of the season at the hands of No. 22 UCF on a late-inning homerun to fall 4-1, but bounced back to shut out Syracuse 4-0 in the nightcap of Day 2 of the Citrus Classic at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World in Orlando.

The 49ers improve to 12-1 on the season and have now posted five shutouts on the season, the most for the squad through its first 13 games since 1989.

Freshman Lizzy Birch led the offense Saturday, posting four hits, including her first collegiate home run, while sophomores Grace Beatty and Taylar Byrne each collected two hits in Game 2.
