CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Southern Miss broke a 2-2 tie with a six-run top of the sixth en route to a 9-6 victory over Charlotte in their C-USA series-opener on Friday night. The 49ers tried to rally with a run in the sixth, three in the eighth and have the tying run at the plate before falling by three.
Charlotte (12-14, 3-4 C-USA) got on the board in the first as Reece Hampton singled to right, moved to second on an error and later scored on a Brett Netzer groundout to second. A run-scoring ground out by the Golden Eagles in the fourth tied it before the first of two home runs by Taylor Braley in the fifth gave the visitors a 2-1 lead.
