The 49ers defense ranked 11th in the country against the run and 25th in the nation, overall, a year ago. A key to those high numbers was a stout defensive line, the bulk of which returns. Three starters from the D-Line are back, including Bednarik Award Watch Lister Alex Highsmith at defensive end, fellow defensive end Tyriq Harris and defensive tackle Timmy Horne.
With its new 4-2-5 alignment, Charlotte's goal is to continue to be stingy against the run while increasing pressure on the quarterback.
"Upfront, we will be relentless in rushing the passer," said assistant head coach Marcus West, the 49ers' co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach.
