Case Western Reserve University first-year pitcher Kyle Gearding was named the University Athletic Association Pitcher of the Week, after helping to lead the Spartans to a win in the team's series finale against New York University on Sunday.
Gearding came out of the bullpen with the Spartans trailing 4-0 with the bases loaded and one out in the third inning, and immediately produced an inning ending 1-2-3 double play. He went on to retire the first nine batters he faced in the contest and allowed just one walk with three strikeouts over four and two-thirds hitless and scoreless innings, allowing CWRU to come-from-behind for a 12-5 win.
