Soaked subs: Carolina Panthers rest starters on a rainy night in Charlotte

If there is something worse in the world of NFL game days than the fourth preseason game it is this: a fourth preseason game that also includes a rain delay.

The Carolina-Pittsburgh game kicked off at 7:52 p.m. instead of the designated 7:30 starting time because of lightning and rain in the area. The teams were called onto the field and then sent back off a couple of times for warmups because of weather threats. Fans weren’t allowed into their soaked seats for awhile, either, and a number of them gave up and went home.

Once the game began, the Panthers seemed to be trying to run the clock from the beginning, as Joe Webb handed off to Cameron Artis-Payne on the first five plays.
