Through six Carolina Panthers games this season, roughing the passer has not been called once. Quarterback Cam Newton has attempted 197 pass attempts and has been forced to scramble on other drop backs but has never benefited from the penalty.
Over the past two-plus seasons, Newton has received only two such penalties despite playing in 40 games and dropping back to pass 1,293 times. By comparison, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has earned nine penalties, New England Patriots Tom Brady eight and the Saints Drew Brees 15 over the same time frame.
On Sunday, Rodgers was brought down outside the tackle box following a pass attempt and suffered a broken collarbone.
