Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks shows home is where his heart is

just lost a close game to the Seattle Seahawks at Bank of America Stadium. They were in the midst of what ultimately would be a two-month streak without a win.

They were reeling.

But then-secondary coach Steve Wilks had a more immediate concern. His mind was four miles away at West Charlotte High School, where players and coaches were struggling with the early morning loss of football coach Mo Collins from kidney failure.

Soon after the Seattle loss, Wilks was there with them.

"He told the kids even though he was at the game, his mind was on them and what they were going through," recalled Stephanie Wilkerson, the dean of students and former assistant athletics director at West Charlotte.
