'Hardwired a special way:' Why Panthers want more 'alphas' like rookie Jaycee Horn

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer recently referred to first-round pick Jaycee Horn as an alpha. He meant it as the ultimate compliment in terms of the cornerback’s leadership, competitiveness and toughness, not the negative connotations such as bullying that sometimes is connected to the term.

He went so far as to say he wanted more alphas such as Horn.

Dr. Eddie Erlandson, a nationally recognized executive coach on leadership, understands.

In 2006, the Boston Red Sox hired Erlandson due to a concern the organization had too many alphas on the senior executive team to succeed.
