Charlotte, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers agreed to a one-year deal with veteran offensive tackle Willie Smith Thursday afternoon, according to the team’s official website.
Carolina waived injured rookie fullback Devon Johnson, who has been dealing with a back injury, to make room for Smith on the team’s 90-man roster.
Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said Monday that backup right tackle Daryl Williams – Carolina's fourth-round selection in 2015 – has not pushed starting tackle Mike Remmers enough during training camp.
Carolina brought Smith and former New York Giants offensive tackle Will Beatty in for workouts Wednesday in Charlotte.
