Update: Panthers general manager Marty Hurney says that Cam Newton has a mid-foot sprain and the team is ‘cautiously optimistic’ that he will be ready to play in Week 1.

The Carolina Panthers have possibly avoided a complete disaster as it appears that franchise quarterback Cam Newton only suffered a sprained left foot after leaving the game in the first half of last night’s preseason game with the New England Patriots.
