Cam Newton progresses in concussion protocol but still unlikely to play

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Carolina Panthers have not officially ruled starting quarterback Cam Newton out for Monday night’s game against Tampa Bay even though the NFL MVP hasn’t been at practice all week.

Newton suffered a concussion in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 48-33 loss at Atlanta. Backup Derek Anderson has taken all of the first-team snaps in practice, typically a sign that player will start.

But Carolina coach Ron Rivera would not name Anderson the starter, reminding “we’ve still got two more days’’ for Newton to be cleared from the concussion protocol.
