The Carolina Hurricanes traveled to Brooklyn, NY, to the Barclays Center on March 18 with extremely slim (around less than one percent) chances at staying in the playoff race. The New York Islanders were largely in the same boat, as both teams are really just fighting for pride now.
Carolina is 11 points out of a wildcard spot, and the Isles entered the game 12 out. A win would at least put the Canes within nine points of the New Jersey Devils in the wildcard race. That’s exactly what they were able to accomplish, but it does not do much for them in the standings.
