News broke this afternoon that Anton Forsberg, acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks in June, had been awarded a new contract following his arbitration hearing. Now, it’s up to the Carolina Hurricanes to accept or decline the contract, the latter of which would allow Forsberg to declare himself an unrestricted free agent.
At the time of Forsberg’s acquisition, Hurricanes GM Don Waddell stated that he hoped the big, Swedish goalie would compete for a spot in the NHL during training camp, a statement which indicates (on the surface, at least) that the contract will be accepted. If so, he’ll come into camp competing with Petr Mrazek, James Reimer, and Alex Nedeljkovic.
