Thunderbirds edge Guelph Gryphons to reach CIS women's hockey final

The emotional shift was seismic.

With 1:16 left in overtime, the UBC Thunderbirds thought they had punched their ticket to the CIS women’s hockey championship final.

Instead, they found themselves in the box against the No. 1-ranked team in the nation, yet managed to hold them off and prompt a shootout.

Then, 16 shooters later, there they were again, joyfully jumping up and down on the Markin MacPhail Centre ice surface. This time for real.

Haneet Parhar, who was the most shocked person in the building when her coach told her to take a turn in the shootout, scored on Guelph Gryphons netminder Valerie Lamenta to lift the T-Birds to a 2-1 semifinal victory on Saturday afternoon.
