Simmons: Firebirds family drama not new in world of sports

This isn’t in any way new — this awkward, emotional business of rich-guy daddy owner, son the player and name the sport.

What happened with the Flint Firebirds of the Ontario Hockey League is a very old story in a brand-new form.

Last year, it happened with hockey in Sudbury.

A few years back, Doug Gilmour made noise for trading his son in Kingston.

Years before, it was football in Calgary.

And long before that, if anyone cares to remember, an unqualified kid named Brent Imlach played three games over two seasons for the Maple Leafs only because his father, Punch, happened to be both coach and general manager.
