With no serious nibbles when the NHL’s free-agency window opened last July, Versteeg instead signed with SC Bern, a perennial contender in the Swiss League.
Thing is, the 30-year-old winger was just settling in overseas when his contract was terminated due to an insurance issue. The two-time Stanley Cup champ headed home and instead accepted a training-camp tryout with the Edmonton Oilers.
