But for Kris Foucault, pulling on the Team Canada jersey was still a dream come true.
The former Calgary Hitmen star received an invite to play for Canada at the Spengler Cup over the holiday season.
“I broke my finger while I was there,” Foucault said. “Our team had a game in between (Spengler Cup games). When I arrived, I was slotted to play a game, but I didn’t end up playing.
“But it was cool to be there. Cool experience, got a gold medal. And I got to wear the jersey on the ice.
