Dustin Byfuglien has evolved into an elite NHL defenceman

PHILADELPHIA -- Confession: I didn't vote for Dustin Byfuglien as the Winnipeg Jets' nominee for the Bill Masterton Trophy.

While I agree No. 33 has shown an improved “dedication to hockey,” one of the award's criteria, over the last couple of years, I thought the “perseverance” and “sportsmanship” angles better fit a few of his teammates who've shown equal dedication to the game.

My vote went to Blake Wheeler, with Mark Scheifele and Bryan Little my runners-up.

The Jets defenceman received the nomination, voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers Association, before Monday's game with the Flyers -- a game that saw the Jets come back from a 2-0 deficit, only to lose, 3-2, in overtime.
