College hockey player charged with assault after drilling referee

Brandon Day was probably hoping to leave the SUNY Broome Ice Center with a championship trophy.

Instead, he walked out of the arena with a shiny new pair of bracelets.

Day, a freshman defenceman with Erie Community College, is facing jail time after he stormed from the penalty box and slammed a referee to the ice during the third period of the National Junior College Athletic Association championship game against Dakota College of Bottineau Sunday in Binghamton, N.Y.

According to WKBW in Buffalo, Day was taken into custody by SUNY Broome Police after the game and charged with assault.
