Canada smokes Russia at women's world hockey championship

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — Laura Schuler apparently has a knack for intermission speeches.

Coach Schuler’s Team Canada scored five times in the first 5:20 of the second period, turning a 1-0 Russia lead into a romp for the home side here at the Sandman Centre on the second day of the IIHF women’s hockey world championships.

Canada wound up with a 8-1 triumph before a crowd of 4,453.

Defenders Meaghan Mikkelson and Halli Krzyzaniak had two goals apiece for the winners, while winger Rebecca Johnston bagged one goal and had three assists. Centre Brianne Jenner recorded four helpers.
