Calgary-raised goalie Carl Stankowski leads Thunderbirds to Memorial Cup

The overtime-winning and, in this case, championship-clinching marker had just been fired into the opposing net.

For any goaltender, that’s good news.

The only downside for Calgary-raised Carl Stankowski after backstopping the Seattle Thunderbirds to a Western Hockey League crown is the 17-year-old was the furthest guy from the celebratory pile.

“When (Alexander) True got the final goal, that’s probably the most excited I’ve ever been, just seeing everybody’s gloves go off,” Stankowski said of Sunday’s whoop-up at Brandt Centre in Regina, where the Thunderbirds clinched the Ed Chynoweth Cup with an overtime triumph against the Pats in Game 6 of their best-of-seven final series.
