Brooks Bandits punch ticket to Royal Bank Cup with win over Portage Terriers

As it turns out, the second time was the charm for the Brooks Bandits.

The AJHL champions needed one more day to accomplish their main objective, but they punched their ticket to the 2016 Royal Bank Cup.

After falling 6-0 to the Western Canada Cup champion West Kelowna Warriors on Saturday, the Bandits and Portage Terriers faced off for the final berth in the national tourney that starts next week in Lloydminster.

Calgarian Josh McKechney scored on a late first period powerplay and Jeff Malott made it two-zip just past the midway point.

That’s all the offence Brooks goaltender Garret Hughson would need in the 2-1 victory in Estevan, Sask.
