Former Cal QB Gilliam receives release

Another one bites the dust for Cal athletics as rising sophomore quarterback Max Gilliam has announced he has received an unconditional release and will be eligible to transfer from Cal.Gilliam, a redshirt freshman in the 2016-17 season, did see time on the field before declaring to leave the program. A three-star recruit, Gilliam signed with Cal in April 2015, citing its esteemed athletics and his potential to play in the Pac-12 conference.

The Bears’ 2017 depth chart may offer insight why Gilliam chose to take his talents elsewhere. Gilliam was third on the depth chart behind redshirt junior Chase Forrest and redshirt sophomore Ross Bowers, meaning his prospects for playing time were minimal.
