Utah moves to decertify BYU police department; campus plans appeal

The Utah Commissioner of Public Safety has sent Brigham Young University notice that its police department will be stripped of authority, the campus said Tuesday in an announcement that also promised an appeal.

The news release from BYU did not say why the state of Utah is seeking to decertify the police force. There’s an ongoing debate about whether BYU’s police should be subject to Utah’s record laws like every other police force in the state.

The Salt Lake Tribune has sued to force BYU police to abide by the Utah Government Records Access and Management Act, or GRAMA.
