A 23-month-old girl has died after being hit by a car in Marion, the sheriff there said Monday.

Summit County Sheriff Justin Martinez announced the death Monday on Twitter. The child’s name was not disclosed.

Sheriff’s Lt. Andrew Wright said the accident happened just after 6 p.m. Saturday on Upper Loop Road (2700 North) in the hamlet of Marion. A family had gathered at a residence for a birthday party, Wright said.

The toddler, with her mother in pursuit, ran between a parked car and a bush and into the road, Wright said. The speed limit is 35 mph, and Wright said the indications are that was approximately how fast a motorist was driving when he applied his brakes.
