Proposed gravel-pit expansion in Draper is off the table for now as company, city council faces resident opposition

Draper • Environmental and health concerns appear to have stopped Geneva Rock from going through with a proposal to increase their mining zone at the Point of the Mountain — for now.

More than 100 people showed up to a public hearing Wednesday evening, many to raise concerns about the company’s planned expansion, but Geneva Rock showed up to propose a concept completely different from the one outlined in its application.

While the original proposal sought to rezone land and potentially allow the gravel pit to grow by some 73 acres, the new concept presented Wednesday contained several major changes — including an 87 percent reduction in the planned expansion to just 18.
