Police recover weapon from 10-year-old boy at Perry charter school

A 10-year-old boy will be referred to juvenile court after he brought a gun to his Box Elder charter school on Wednesday morning.

Perry Police Chief Scott Hancey said officials believe the child brought his father’s gun to Promontory School of Expeditionary Learning “to show his friends." The boy did not make any threats to his classmates, Hancey said.

School administrators learned about the handgun around 9 a.m. and notified police, who were able to recover the weapon.

Utah officials earlier this year unveiled a new firearm safety campaign for public schools that outlines guidelines for how they should respond when they encounter a gun.
