Man who was in car that ran down and killed South Salt Lake police officer has been charged with murder

The man who was in the passenger seat when an acquaintance drove a car and hit and killed a police officer was charged Thursday with murder and other crimes.

Jeffrey Black, 43, was charged with the first-degree felony in connection South Salt Lake Police Officer David Romrell’s Nov. 24 death. He also faces charges of obstructing justice, robbery, attempted burglary and failure to stop at the command of a police officer.

Police believe Black was in the passenger seat of the black Chevrolet Impala, driven by 31-year-old Felix Calata, that struck Romrell as the two tried to flee from a South Salt Lake residence while trying to “collect a debt.
