House GOP leaders move to strip Rep. King of committee assignments over comments

Washington • A panel of Republican leaders voted unanimously Monday to keep veteran Iowa lawmaker Steve King off of House committees, a firm rebuke to a influential opponent of illegal immigration who sparked outrage last week after openly questioning whether the term “white supremacist” was offensive.

“I think he ought to step aside and I think Congress ought to make it very clear he has no place there,” Utah Sen. Romney told CNN’s Manu Raju on Monday.

A few hours later, Rep. Chris Stewart said in an interview with CNN’s Chris Cuomo: “I wish he’d resign, frankly.
