Former Utah nurse expected to be sentenced for stealing painkillers and infecting patients with hepatitis C

A former Utah nurse is expected to be sentenced Monday afternoon in federal court after she admitted to stealing hospital painkillers and infecting seven patients with a rare strain of hepatitis C.

Elet Neilson, 53, pleaded guilty in September to two counts of tampering with a consumer product and two counts of fraudulently obtaining a controlled substance. A dozen similar charges were dismissed as part of the deal.

The plea deal allows U.S. District Judge Dee Benson to sentence her to federal prison for up to 10 years.

But Neilson’s attorney, Adam Bridge, argued for less time in court papers.
