Fire breaks out in Layton apartment building

A building in a Layton apartment complex caught fire Monday, leading to five people suffering minor injuries.

The fire started in a first-floor unit of the Layton Meadows Apartments, in building 586, at the corner of 1425 North and 600 West in Layton, said Layton Fire Chief Kevin Ward.

A Layton fire crew was answering an alarm at the Layton Hills Mall, just to the south of the apartment complex, when one of the engineers saw smoke at 2:26 p.m., Ward said.

Ultimately, the fire prompted three alarms, Ward said, as fresh firefighters were swapped in for the first crews, who had to rest because of the hot weather.
