BYU holds off upset-minded Santa Clara, 80-74, for weekend sweep

Provo • Santa Clara remained winless at the Marriott Center on Saturday night, but not before throwing a pretty good scare into the heavily favored BYU Cougars.

TJ Haws hit a big 3-pointer with under two minutes remaining to hold off the Broncos’ late rally, and BYU took an 80-74 win to improve to 3-1 in West Coast Conference play, 11-8 overall.

Yoeli Childs led BYU with 27 points and six rebounds, while Haws added 16 and Luke Worthington chipped in 13, a season high.

The Cougars were seemingly pulling away six minutes into the second half, but Childs was hit with a technical foul after a dunk for apparently staring down the referee after no foul was called on the play, his third personal.
