BYU basketball legend Mel Hutchins died late Wednesday night at his home in Encinitas, California. He was 90 years old.

Hutchins, a member of the BYU Hall of Fame since 1976, is one of four men's basketball players to have his jersey retired.

The "Big Elf" was a two-time Skyline Conference first-team honoree. Hutchins' BYU teams won three conference titles (1948, 1950 and 1951) during his time there. He still owns the single-season school record for rebounds in a season (471). He averaged 15.4 points and 12.7 rebounds during his senior season.

After he helped the Cougars to the 1951 NIT championship, Hutchins was the second overall pick by the Tri-Cities Blackhawks in the 1951 draft.
