The boy was first reported missing at 9 p.m., according to a news release from the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office. Family members told officers they feared he’d fallen into the waterway near their home in the farming town of Thatcher.

Scuba teams responded to the area and scanned the canal. Before the company was able to shut off the water, search and rescue crews found the boy’s body at 9:45 p.m.
