PROVO — BYU broke open a close game down the stretch in beating San Diego 74-58 at the Marriott Center on Saturday night.
The turning point: With BYU holding a 61-54 lead, TJ Haws drilled a long 3-pointer in transition. Following a 3-point miss from the Toreros, Jahshire Hardnett scored a layup and was fouled. With the free throw, the Cougars built a then game-high 13-point lead at 67-54 with 3:26 to play.
The hero: Haws tied his season high with 24 points, hitting 10 of 14 shots and 4 of 8 from 3-point range. He added three assists, two steals and a blocked shot.
