Sixth Inning Sinks Butler at Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Butler took a 14-1 loss at Samford on Friday night in the 2016 season opener. The final score was not a great indicator of the game as a whole as the home team scored 10 of their 14 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to blow the game wide open.

The first run of the game crossed home plate in the bottom of the fourth off a sacrifice fly. Each team would go quietly in the fifth, before a disastrous sixth inning that would lead Samford to victory.

Left-handed pitcher Jeff Shank gave up a single to start the inning and was then replaced after the third batter as Samford recorded back-to-back doubles to the gaps.
