INDIANAPOLIS – Avery Woodson did not know Joel Cornette, was not his teammate, had never heard of him before arriving at Butler University.
But after Woodson, a recent transfer, attended the Aug. 22 memorial service for Cornette, there was something he felt he must do. Woodson went to the coaches and told them: I cannot wear No. 33.
“I was just moved by the service and what he meant not only to his family, but his teammates and his community,” Woodson said. “He was one of the greatest players to play here at Butler. So me not being here very long, I feel like I haven’t done enough or deserve to wear his number.
